Is Mount Manaslu harder than Everest?

Everest’s death toll is spread across seven decades of increasingly commercialised climbing, which is part of why its rate looks lower on paper; the route, weather forecasting, and rescue infrastructure have all matured since Hillary and Norgay’s first ascent in 1953. Manaslu’s numbers, by contrast, are skewed heavily by a small number of catastrophic single-day avalanche events rather than a steady accumulation of individual accidents. 

That distinction matters more than the raw percentage: a mountain where risk arrives in sudden, mountain-wide events behaves very differently, from a planning standpoint, than one where risk accumulates gradually with altitude. 

Camp-by-Camp: How the Two Mountains Actually Compare

On Everest’s South Col route, the difficulty escalates gradually and predictably. Base Camp to Camp 1 crosses the Khumbu Icefall; dangerous, but fixed with ladders and ropes refreshed daily by the Icefall Doctors team. Camp 2 sits in the relatively flat Western Cwm. Camp 3 is carved into the Lhotse Face, a genuine 40-50 degree ice wall that demands real jumaring skill. Camp 4, the South Col, sits at the edge of the death zone, and the summit push from there is 10 – 12 hours of technical ridge climbing, including the Hillary Step section (no more the famous Boulder), above 8,000m with almost no margin for delay.

On Manaslu, climbers establish a similar four-camp structure: Camp 1 around 5,700m, Camp 2 around 6,400m, Camp 3 around 6,800m, and Camp 4 near 7,400m, with the summit push launching from there. The route from Base Camp to Camp 1 winds through a heavily crevassed glacier, requiring careful navigation and fixed lines. Camp 1 to Camp 2 is where the mountain’s reputation is earned,  steep snow slopes, crevasse fields, some season ladder crossing, crossing beneath the seracs that have historically been released with no warning, regardless of time of day. Camp 2 to Camp 3 is more straightforward snow climbing, but it’s also where oxygen use typically begins for most commercial climbers. The final stretch above Camp 4 introduces Manaslu’s signature hazard: a false summit, or “fore-summit,” that has fooled experienced mountaineers into believing they’d completed the climb, followed by a corniced ridge to the true summit that turns back a meaningful number of attempts each season.

The Acclimatisation Rotation: Manaslu’s Real Timeline

A full Manaslu expedition typically runs 30 to 40 days door to door, and the rotation schedule is what separates a well-prepared team from a rushed one. The standard approach uses a “climb high, sleep low” strategy across two rotations before the summit push:

First rotation: Climb from Base Camp to Camp 1, navigating the crevassed lower glacier on fixed lines. Spend two nights at Camp 1 to begin acclimatising, with a short excursion partway toward Camp 2, then descend fully back to Base Camp to recover.

Second rotation: Climb back through Camp 1 to sleep at Camp 2, then push up to touch Camp 3, returning all the way to Base Camp for an extended rest before the summit attempt.

Summit push: Generally a 3-day movement from Base Camp to Camp 4, with most climbers on supplemental oxygen from Camp 3 onward. Teams that compress this timeline to save days are, in our experience, the ones most likely to be caught by a weather or avalanche window they didn’t have the schedule to avoid.

This is also why WILD YAK builds real rest days into Base Camp itself between rotations,  final rope and ice-axe drills, equipment checks, and food planning happen there, not on the mountain, so climbing days are spent climbing rather than problem-solving.

What Our Team Has Learned on Both Mountains

Everest punishes bad decisions at altitude; the mountain gives you a narrow, well-mapped window and holds you to it. Manaslu punishes bad timing. Our Sherpa team, who between them have stood on the summit of Everest seven times and climbed eighteen different 8,000m peaks, read the Camp I-IV slopes on Manaslu the way a sailor reads weather: fresh snow load, temperature swing, and wind loading matter more than the calendar date. A rotation gets held or moved on those signs, not on a fixed schedule, even when it costs the team a day they’d rather not lose.

That discipline is why WILD YAK operates in small, focused teams of 4 to 6 climbers on every departure. On a mountain like Manaslu, where the primary hazard is a mountain-wide event rather than an individual misstep, the value of a small team isn’t comfort; it’s speed of communication. A 6-person team can make a go/no-go call and act on it in minutes. A sixty-person commercial queue cannot, and queuing itself becomes a risk multiplier in exposed terrain.

We also spend more time than most operators talking climbers through the fore-summit problem before they ever leave Base Camp, because it is a psychological hazard as much as a physical one. Climbers who’ve trained for months and are running on fumes at 8,100m are primed to see the fore-summit and stop, and the ridge beyond it is not a place to be making that decision for the first time in the moment.

Manaslu Expedition 2026  –  What It Costs

●      Climbing permit (royalty): roughly USD 900 (off-season) to USD 1,800 (peak autumn season), paid to the Nepal Department of Tourism through your registered operator.

●      Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): USD 30 per person, flat.

●      Restricted Area Permit (RAP): USD 100/person for the first week in the Sept – Nov season (USD 75/week Dec – Aug), plus a daily rate after week one.

●      Typical full-service expedition cost: USD 14,800 – 25,000 per person depending on operator, group size, and oxygen/Sherpa support level.

●      What drives the range: climber-to-guide ratio, number of supplemental oxygen bottles included, whether a personal experienced and skilled Sherpa is assigned for the summit push, Base Camp comfort level (dining tent, communications, medical kit), and insurance/rescue coverage requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Manaslu’s death rate?

It lies between roughly 2.7% and 15% depending on the source and time period measured, compared with Everest’s roughly 1 – 2.6%. The gap is driven overwhelmingly by avalanche events rather than individual climbing accidents.

What is the best time of year to climb Manaslu?

Late September through early November. Spring is not considered a viable season for this particular peak, and winter attempts have not succeeded to date. Early autumn can still carry heavy, wet monsoon-leftover snow on the slopes, which is part of why timing the departure correctly matters as much as physical readiness.

Can a novice climber attempt Manaslu?

With proper training, guiding, and supplemental oxygen, yes – but it is not a peak we’d recommend as a first high-altitude objective without prior experience above 6,000m. Understanding acclimatization physiology and recognizing your own altitude symptoms early are as important as fitness.

Can Manaslu be climbed without supplemental oxygen?

A small number of highly experienced climbers have done it, but it remains far outside the norm. Commercial expeditions, including ours, operate without O2 but analyzing the experience level of the climber, and also use oxygen starting around Camp 3 or Camp 4 specifically because of the technical difficulty and exposure near the fore-summit ridge.

How long does a full Manaslu expedition take?

Plan for 30-40 days including fly-in to Samagoan village, two acclimatization rotations, the summit push, and descent. Compressed timelines are the single most common factor behind failed or unsafe attempts.
