CHO OYU EXPEDITION
Cho Oyu Expedition: A Climb Beyond Boundaries
The Cho Oyu Expedition is a journey to the sixth-highest peak in the world, standing at an impressive 8,201 meters (26,906 feet). Known as the “Turquoise Goddess,” Cho Oyu offers a challenging altitude climb that is less technically demanding compared to other 8,000-meter peaks. This makes it a favored destination for both seasoned climbers and those aspiring to reach 8,000 meters, as well as for individuals preparing for Everest. The northwest side, the most popular route, combines breathtaking vistas with the rigorous demands of high-altitude climbing, including the short icy challenges between Camps I and II, as well as the rocky yellow band of the summit zone. Recently reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown, the mountain welcomes climbers once again to experience its grandeur and test their limits.

Climber to Sherpa ratio (1:1)
Climbing a mountain like Cho Oyu can be a risky and intimidating experience. Knowing if you’ll have the proper support and guidance to make your climb safe and enjoyable might be difficult.
Low guide-to-member ratios often compromise safety and individual attention in most other agencies. Inexperienced high-altitude climbers can feel overwhelmed and unsupported, and that’s not how it should be.
WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS offers our Cho Oyu expedition members an expert WILD YAK expedition Sherpa guide per member. An unparalleled 1:1 Sherpa guide-to-members ratio ensures you get all the help and support you need, resulting in a better and safer experience on the mountain.
With WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS, you can be sure that your safety is always a top priority.
In Kathmandu:
We stay in superior category hotels – Hyatt Regency and Yak & Yeti, or similar category, on a single room basis, breakfasts included.
The included evening meals are served in excellent restaurants in Kathmandu. WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS has tested each restaurant to meet our client’s requirements best.
Please note that drinks are at each participant’s expense.
Experience an epic journey from Kathmandu to the Cho Oyu Advanced Base Camp.
Our journey begins in Kathmandu, where we obtain the necessary Chinese visa for all members. This is followed by a flight over the Himalayas to Lhasa, where you can catch a stunning glimpse of the world’s highest mountain range. On arrival in Lhasa, we stay in a comfortable Tibetan-style hotel, where we rest and enjoy delicious meals.
During the journey by private vehicle to Cho Oyu Base Camp at 5,200 metres, we enjoy acclimatising with cultural visits to the various towns we pass through on the Tibetan high plateau. The journey is picturesque, with majestic views of the Himalayas. We gain altitude as the days go by.
We stay in traditional superior style hotels, in single rooms, with all main meals included.
We follow the overland route back to Kathmandu at the end of the expedition.
Located at an altitude of 5200 metres, this is where we meet our exceptional WILD YAK Team of expedition sherpas. They have worked hard to set up a temporary Base Camp. We spend the next two days there, ensuring that our bodies acclimatise efficiently for our ascent to the higher camps. We also arrange for the collective equipment to be transported by yaks to the Advanced Base Camp, located at an altitude of 5,700 metres. This is the main operational camp for our Cho Oyu expedition.
Our dedicated WILD YAK kitchen team provides hearty meals and refreshing drinks to give us energy for the rest of the adventure. This will be our “home away from home” as we progress towards our goal.
WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS has its own philosophy regarding the Advanced Base Camp: the ascent of Cho Oyu is one of the central parts of this expedition, comfort, hygiene and good food at the Base Camp and Advanced Base Camp are among our priorities.
WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS’ Advanced Base Camp is comfortable and well organised. Each participant has an individual tent. We equip each tent with an insulating layer, a good mattress and a pillow.
Our mess tent is triple insulated and has heating at certain times of the day. A water bucket with soap is located next to the mess tent. A solar charging system is available for your electronic devices.
The Base and Advanced Camps also have a toilet and shower tent.
High Camps:
In the high camps, we encourage team spirit by asking two members to share a tent to support each other and make diligent observations of each other’s form, particularly at night.
We provide essential equipment such as thermal mattresses, utensils, and food.
If necessary, we can also hire sleeping bags for the high-altitude camps.
Our WILD YAK Expedition Team will happily assist you in setting up and dismantling tents and cooking the water.
The Cho Oyu ascent route comprises five camps:
Base camp at 5200 metres
Advanced Base Camp at 5700 metres
Camp-I at 6400 metres
Camp-II at 6800 metres
Camp-III at 7300 metresThe most difficult part of the ascent lies between Camp-I and Camp-II, with numerous crevasses and seracs.
The day of the summit is the most demanding: it takes around 12 hours of walking at an altitude of over 7,300 metres, returning to camp-II . All in all, the ascent is not extremely difficult, but you do need to be in excellent physical condition.

OPTIONAL ADDS ON
Our experience says maximizing oxygen flow rates in expeditions is a proven strategy for increasing success rates.
Maximizing your oxygen flow rate can enhance performance and maintain energy levels more efficiently. An extra oxygen bottle also serves as a safety buffer for unforeseen delays, emergencies, or challenging conditions during the climb.
Our expedition members who have maximized their oxygen flows have reported significant improvements in their mental and physical well-being. On summit climbs, they experienced better appetite, increased warmth, heightened strength, and greater enjoyment. By prioritizing oxygen optimization, you can optimize your overall expedition experience.
Contact us to enhance your performance by maximizing your oxygen flow rate.
Note: You can combine different options: maximum oxygen flow with additional Sherpa support in one package at a favorable price to get the best experience of your expedition.
Add a personal climbing Sherpa:
Sherpas play a critical role in supporting climbers during expeditions at extreme altitudes. Their expertise, strength, and unwavering commitment make the ascent to the summit more attainable while effectively mitigating the associated risks. Their invaluable contributions enable climbers to fulfill their dreams and conquer the formidable challenges that await them. Adding a personal sherpa contributes thus to a sense of security. It reduces the risk of injuries or physical strain associated with carrying heavy backpacks. It is best for everyone with difficulties recovering from strenuous activity.
By opting for an additional Personal Sherpa service, you’ll gain invaluable support from a dedicated and highly experienced WILD YAK climbing Sherpa.
Your personal Sherpa(s) will accompany you throughout the journey, guiding and assisting you from Base Camp to the summit and back. He will even help carry your necessary personal equipment to the higher camps. You will share a tent with your Personal Sherpa, who will also handle cooking responsibilities, ensuring a proper recovery and comfortable experience.
Our WILD YAK Expedition Sherpa guides are highly skilled professionals and friendly and supportive companions. Having summited Everest and other challenging peaks multiple times, they have the expertise to make your climb successful.

It is possible to climb Cho Oyu without additional oxygen, but proper training for several months before the expedition is necessary. Many climbers have successfully accomplished this.
-
With or without oxygen?
You can climb Cho Oyu in two ways, either with or without additional oxygen. Eventually, both ways aim to be at the summit and experience the 8000 peaks climbing at the end.

Questions related to my travel
What is the best way to get to Nepal?
Many airlines offer flights to Kathmandu International Airport. Most airlines fly directly to most countries via Doha, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Delhi.
When should I book my ticket?
If you see a good deal and want to book your flights as early as possible, please ensure that you can change your tickets, or you run the risk of losing your ticket in the event we have to cancel the trip if we don’t meet the minimum number of participants. We remain at your disposal for the booking of your international flights. Feel free to contact us!
Can I get a cheap ticket online?
The risk with these tickets is that you generally have to pay a lot more if you need to make changes to your ticket. We strongly recommend that you use a travel agent for your trip, as they can help you solve many problems. In the long run, they save you money! We use professional travel agents for all our staff and guide bookings. Please do not hesitate to contact us
What if I arrive early or depart late?
On a trip as long as this, we request that you arrive in Kathmandu on the assigned date to ensure your baggage makes it on time and you have time to recover from jet lag before your Himalayan experience. It is hard to catch the group if you arrive late and wait for lost baggage!
If you wish to arrive earlier or depart later to enjoy more from Kathmandu or discover further places in Nepal, we’re happy to help you organise your extended stay.
However, remember that this is a long journey, and people usually want to return home as quickly as possible after the climb finishes. Therefore, we recommend that you take some flexible tickets.
-
Will someone come to pick me up at the airport?
A WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS representative will be waiting outside Kathmandu airport to meet you on arrival.
-
Are there any entry or visa requirements?
Yes, there are. We kindly refer you to our “Visa Procedure” section on our website. Be sure to have the suggested USD amount in cash for your visa application upon your arrival in Kathmandu. Currently, a 90-day visa costs US$125 for most nationalities.
