An authentic ski experience in the core of the Gran Paradiso Natural Park
Are you dreaming of a true ski touring experience? Seeing untouched landscapes, feeling the sensation of being away from the crowd… With a bit of luck, you even might see an ibex on a rocky outcrop.
WILD YAK ALPS takes you on a 5-day ski tour through the national park around Gran Paradiso in the Italian Alps. For a total immersion in the mountain world.
On the third day, we will reach the Gran Paradiso with its 4061 meters / 13,323 feet of altitude. It is the only 4000M peak entirely located in Italy.
During the second half of the week, our tracks take us to the southern part of the Gran Paradiso Natural Park, far from the crowds.
We spend the nights at Rifugio Federico Chabod, Rifugio Vittorio Sella and Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele, as well as the charming and lesser known Rifugio Pontese.

Arrival by taxi-bus via Aosta to Cogne Valnontey. From here, we follow a forest road, then the path to the refuge on slightly steeper slopes to the Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2588 m / 8490 ft). It is located above the valley on a beautiful terrace.

Day 02
Rifugio Frederico Chabod (2750 m / 9022 ft)
Today we start our “Giro d’Italia” with an interesting stage through alpine passes and high mountain peaks, including the Gran Serra at 3552 m (11,653 ft). We ride the summit of the Gran Serra from north to west. The last few meters on the summit ridge are done equipped with ice axes and crampons, with the skis attached to the backpack.
We cross the Gran Neyron pass (3414 m / 11,200 ft). A nice descent takes us to the Chabod Refuge (2750 m / 9022 ft).

Day 03
Gran Paradiso (4016 m / 13,323 ft) -> Rifugio Vittorio Emmanuelle (2735 m / 8973 ft)
After crossing the Laveciau and Gran Paradiso glaciers, we quickly gain altitude and arrive without any problem in the large basin below the Gran Paradiso summit. The last few meters are spent on foot in the snow and then in a short horizontal rocky section until we reach the famous Madonna at the summit. The efforts of the ascent are rewarded by a magnificent panorama.
We go down directly on the slightly steeper western slopes to the Rifugio Vittorio Emmanuele II (2735 m / 8973 ft).

Day 04
Rifugio Pontese (2200 m / 7217 ft)
Along the imposing south face of the Gran Paradiso, we follow a wide valley until we reach the Colle del Gran Paradiso (3335 m / 10,941 ft). We then descend to the south. In the silence of the mountain, we make our tracks over the Col dei Becchi (2989 m / 9806 ft) to the Rifugio Pontese (2200 m / 7217 ft).
The Pontese refuge is located in the province of Piedmont – connoisseurs will immediately see it on the wine list!
D+ : 850 m / D- : 1350 m
Duration: approx. 5 hours
Day 05
Cogne Lillaz (1617 m / 5305 ft)
Long and beautiful last day for our return to Cogne Lillaz (1629 m / 5305 ft) by the Teleccio pass (3304 m / 10,839 ft).
From the refuge, we climb the vast southern slopes until we reach the pass. We cross a steeper part with crampons, carrying the skis attached to the backpack. In a fabulous alpine atmosphere, we descend through the Teleccio glacier and the Val di Valeille.
This is the end of our wonderful ski tour around the southernmost 4000- meter peak of the Alps.
End of the journey in the afternoon.

TECHNICAL SKILLS & FITNESS LEVEL
Previous ski touring experience required.
Good physical condition for ascents of about 4 to 8 hours per day.
Technical: slopes up to 40° / easy climbing passages, with crampons
Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any doubt about the level required.
WILD YAK EXPEDITIONS would like to make you aware that you will be on an unmarked high mountain route and that you should be aware of the objective dangers associated with such an activity (rock falls, avalanches, low temperatures, crevasses).

OVERNIGHT IN MOUNTAIN HUTS
The good Italian cuisine and friendly hut keepers will make your experience a real pleasure. The beds are equipped with blankets but it is mandatory that you take a light silk sleeping bag with you. In principle, all the huts have cold running water, but it is not drinkable and should be used sparingly. We draw your attention to the fact that depending on the season, there might be no tap water. Also, in some of the huts, you might not be able to charge any devices.
